How do I find information about a person's life? (biography / biographical information)

Please note, to access any of these sources online, you'll need to log in (click here for instructions on how to login; or here for instructions on how to find your username/password).

  • We have a Library database all about biographical information: Biography in Context. You could just type a name in the search box, but your results may be better if you first click on "Person Search"
  • If you're researching a literary author, you can also try a Library database called Gale Literature (aka Gale Literary Sources). This database also has a "Person Search." Once you search a name there, your search results will contain biographies as well as literary criticism, topic overviews, news, and more. Click on "Biographies" to narrow your results to information about the author's own childhood or history.
  • You can also use OneSearch (the search box on the LAVC Library homepage), and type an authors name (with quotation marks) and the word biography (for example, "nathaniel hawthorne" biography). Your search results will include ebooks and articles from lots of different Library databases.
